Topic: Cocoa Production

November 2014 - December 2017

Africa - Ivory Coast

Responsible:Fredy Hiestand

Swiss Tropical – Johann Dähler

In 2014, a cultivation project was started in Tiassalé, Ivory Coast, financed by Fredy Hiestand and directed by Johann Dähler. ECOTOP was commissioned for the installation and agricultural support of the project. On an area of 60 hectares, on which pineapple in monoculture was grown for more than 30 years, the degraded savanna site is to be reintroduced into a productive forest ecosystem through the application of the principles of dynamic agroforestry.

The cocoa is planted in rows 3 m apart, the distance between the cacao rows is at least 4 m (833 trees/ha). The space in-between is covered by savanna grass (Panicum maximum), which is used for the production of biomass during the first years. This must be regularly cut mechanically. The cuttings are then piled on the cocoa rows.

Banana, cashew, other fruit tree species, high-quality timber and oil palms are planted between the cacao trees. During the first year, manioc and other food cultures were also integrated.

At a distance of 16 m x 6m  rubber is planted in addition. In this way, positive synergy effects are obtained due to a combined use of rubber, cashew, oil palm, and cocoa.
